5 Invisalign Mistakes to Avoid for Optimal Results
Removable braces come with their own set of unique challenges despite their many benefits. Learn what mistakes to avoid to get the best results from your orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign is a system that straightens teeth faster and with less pain than traditional braces. It’s, by far, the most aesthetically pleasing solution available.

However, plenty of things can go wrong and impact your final results.

Fortunately, you can avoid these mistakes easily with a bit of guidance from experts. Read on to find out what our dental experts at Supertooth have to say about getting the best results from Invisalign.

1. Drinking fluids with the aligners on

While wearing Invisalign, the only beverage you can drink is plain water. Colored fluids such as coffee, soda, and juice will stain the trays.

2. Not wearing the aligners enough

Because the aligners are removable, many make the mistake of forgetting to put them back on in time. For best results, you need to wear them at least 20-22 hours per day.

If you have a milder case, Invisalign may be able to straighten your smile even within half a year. However, if you don’t wear the aligners for as long as possible, the treatment will take longer.

3. Placing the aligners in hot water

Placing the aligners in hot water to clean them can distort the plastic in the aligners. When the shape of the aligners is modified, your teeth will be moved accordingly.

Use only cold or warm water, so the plastic doesn’t change shape.

4. Smoking cigarettes while wearing the aligners

Smoking cigarettes stain the transparent trays. Unfortunately, stains from smoking can’t be removed from the trays regardless of how religious you are with your cleaning habits.

In addition, smoking may increase your risk for cavities during the treatment.

5. Practicing poor dental hygiene

You may floss and brush your teeth, but with Invisalign, you must brush your aligners, too. Most providers usually prescribe special cleaning agents for the aligners.

Plain water isn’t enough to kill off the bacteria, and even though the trays may appear clear, they can still be covered in harmful bacteria capable of corroding your tooth enamel.
